Digital News Report 2025: in the US, social media and video overtake television for the first time
The Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report 2025, based on roughly 100,000 interviews across 48 markets, found a tipping point in the United States: 54% of the population accesses news through social media and video platforms, ahead of television (50%) and news websites and apps (48%).
Globally, video news consumption on social media rose from 52% in 2020 to 65%, and 44% of 18-to-24-year-olds now consider social media and video their main source of information. Creators and personalities are gaining ground over journalistic brands.
For the first time, the study measured the use of AI chatbots for news: only 7% do so weekly, though the figure doubles among those under 25 (15%).
