The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford published its Digital News Report in June 2024, based on surveys in nearly fifty markets. Overall trust in news held steady at around 40%, while roughly four in ten respondents said they sometimes or often avoid the news.

The report found that 59% of respondents were worried about telling what is real from what is fake online, a figure that rose in countries with ongoing elections. It also documented the growth of video platforms, with TikTok gaining ground as a news source among younger audiences, and the growing influence of creators and personalities over journalistic brands.

On artificial intelligence, most of the public said they were uncomfortable with news produced mainly by AI, though more open to its use as support for journalists in tasks such as translation or summarizing.
