UNESCO awarded the 2025 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa, on the recommendation of an international jury. The ceremony was held on 7 May 2025 in Brussels, as part of the World Press Freedom Conference.

Founded in 1926, La Prensa stopped printing in 2021 after authorities withheld its newsprint at customs; its manager was jailed and much of its staff had to go into exile. Since then, the paper has kept publishing its digital edition from outside the country.

The government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo responded by announcing Nicaragua’s withdrawal from UNESCO, as confirmed by the organization’s director-general, Audrey Azoulay.
