María Corina Machado receives the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Machado, barred from running in the 2024 election, led Edmundo González Urrutia’s campaign and the collection of tally sheets the opposition presented as proof of his victory. She had been living in hiding since then.
In Venezuela, independent coverage of political affairs remains under heavy restrictions: website blocks, station closures and journalist detentions documented by local organizations such as the SNTP and Espacio Público.
