Donald Trump wins the US presidential election

Donald Trump won the 5 November 2024 US presidential election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, carrying every state considered a tossup. He was also the first Republican candidate to win the popular vote since 2004. He began his second term on 20 January 2025.

During the campaign, Trump repeatedly called critical media “enemies of the people” and pledged to review broadcasters’ licenses. Press-freedom organizations asked the new administration to respect First Amendment guarantees and journalists’ access to public information.

Election night again tested newsroom protocols: projecting results only with sufficient data, distinguishing between partial counts and final results, and debunking unfounded fraud claims circulating on social media in real time.
